MAV presents – Senegambian Jazz Band Southside Album Launch
Tickets FREE, places limited. RSVP via the link.
Live N Local is proud to host the Southside album launch of The Senegambian Jazz Band’s self-titled debut album in the iconic MEMO Music Hall. The Senegambian Jazz Band fuses Afro jazz, deep world music beats, and funk to create some truly awe-inspiring rhythms and melodies. The members, hailing from Gambia, Senegal, Ethiopia, Ghana and Australia have come together to share their outstanding talent and flair, combining the improvisational spirit of each heritage.
The talented Amadou Suso fronts the six piece band singing in his native Mandinka, whilst demonstrating contemporary mastery of the kora. The sublime kora led melodies are complemented by the formidable percussive talents of Boubaca Gaye on the djembe and conga with Julius Sackey on drums, inviting fans to lose themselves in the pulsating West African rhythms.
Bass player Yoseph Bekele’s skilful grasp of the polyrhythmic elements of the music seamlessly connects his unique Ethio-jazz flavor to the groove. Add the soulful strains of Tom Benson on sax and the scintillating guitar solos of Luke Koszanski and you have an eclectic jazz fusion which challenges audience perceptions of both African and Jazz music.
Brought to you by the City of Port Phillip and St Kilda Festival, Live N Local is a celebration of and for the City of Port Phillip local community and visitors. For the second year the Festival will warm up the last few days of winter and run August 19 until August 26.
Local venues, hidden gems and industry organisations open their doors to eight days of free live music performances and artist development opportunities.
The jam-packed program is curated from a call for entries process that is open to musicians living, working or studying in the City of Port Phillip. Once local only to venues in St Kilda, the program is now proud to present events all over the City of Port Phillip.
Live N Local’s free Artist Development Program for both emerging and established musicians allows attendees to meet experts and gain further skills and knowledge.
The Right Track – a series of forums that roughly chart the making of a record – from songwriting to marketing and distribution; and
The Door’s Open – a showcase of local organisations that work with and for musicians. These education bodies, recording studios, music retail and hire businesses open their doors for free tours and workshops.
