Melbourne based music not for profit, AARDVARK, is turning 10! This very special gig is a chance to spend the afternoon listening to some fantastic local music whilst supporting a great cause.

AARDVARK is very excited to bring together the Aardvarkians, families, music therapists, artists, ambassadors, sponsors, volunteers, supporters and general public to celebrate what we have achieved together over the last decade. The gig will feature live music from our fantastic ambassadors and highly acclaimed musicians STONEFIELD and MONIQUE BRUMBY and we will also hear a set from our talented AARDVARKIANS.

There will be a special keynote speech from Dr. Katrina McFerran (Associate Dean in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music at the University of Melbourne). We will also hear reflections from some of the young participants and check in with some of the artists we have worked with including Gotye and Missy Higgins. Excellent raffle prizes will be up for grabs including our treasured signed guitar (with over 100 artists’ signatures, including James Tylor, Nick Cave, Carol King, Paul Dempsey, Claire Bowditch and many many more!)

This gig is for anyone who wants to learn more about Aardvark, get involved, help Aardvark continue to reach young people at risk or who just wants to listen to some amazing bands on a Sunday afternoon.

More Information:

Aardvark connects 14-24 year olds who are experiencing serious medical or personal adversity, with recording artists, music therapists and artist mentors to write, perform, record and distribute original music. Aardvark uses the power of music, combined with peer connection and collaboration to give these young people the opportunity to expand their identity and wellbeing through creative self-expression and skills development. Aardvark focuses on providing a community for young people with similar life experiences who require extra support to access music and songwriting opportunities. Emphasis is also placed on providing opportunities for future pathways into leadership and employment. Aardvark is driven by passion and inclusion and past participants describe being part of Aardvark as a unique and life changing experience.

“Aardvark made me happy when I was the most unhappy I’d ever been. Not only did Aardvark encourage me to express myself, it allowed a space where judgement and self-criticism did not impede that expression”, Eva – Aardvark Alumni

Stonefield is an Australian rock band made up of four sisters: Amy, Hannah, Sarah, and Holly Findlay. Stonefield is from Darraweit Guim, a small town in rural Victoria. The band won the 2010 Triple J Unearthed High contest in 2010 and was subsequently placed on high rotation. Since then they have gone from strength to strength performing far and wide from the famous Glasonbery festival in the UK to the MCG in Melbourne. Stonefield’s third album ‘Far From Earth’ will be released in April 2018. Stonefield have been working with Aardvark since 2014. We are delighted now to have Stonefield as Aardvark ambassadors and look forward to working with them more in 2018.

Their sophomore record ‘As Above, So Below’ (2016) laid a Sabbath-strata, from which they’ve launched a legion of followers, festival dates and world tours, hitting the road with everyone from Meat Puppets to Fleetwood Mac, they’ve traversed in ways that few others have. Stonefield’s latest single ‘Delusion’, and first for Flightless Records, demonstrates a shift from the hardened psych pop of earlier records toward more prog and heavy metal. Heavy waves of operatic synth and tubular bells ring below guitars with mellotron lines that warn you that humans don’t belong in space.’

Monique Brumby is a much celebrated, ARIA award winning Australian singer-songwriter and producer. Monique’s work displays a unique production style and expressive vocal delivery and watching Monique perform live with her full band is an experience not to be missed.

Monique began as volunteer facilitator with Aardvark in 2011 with Wally De Backer. She gave an incredible amount of her time and talent to the program and had an extremely positive impact on the young people she worked with. Monique then moved to Creative Director, lead Songwriter and Facilitator between 2013 and 2015. Monique is now a wonderful Ambassador to Aardvark and her passion and commitment contributes greatly to the Aardvarkian community.

The Aardvarkians are made up of participants from the Aardvark Sessions programs that have run for the last 10 years. A super group of young musicians! The songs have been written together with the support of a Music Therapist and a Musician. Some of the artists the young people have worked with on their music are Tristan Goodall (The Audreys), Wally DeBacker (Gotye), Ecca Vandal, Missy Higgins, Ben Abraham and more. The music produced by these young Aardvarkians is incredibly moving, diverse and showcases some formidable talent!
